Ainmneacha/Names

There is always an ‘A’ before a name in Irish when it is used to call people or to address them face to face. The ‘A’ is always written but isn’t always pronounced.

A Úna              Una
A Robert          Robert
In addition, Irish changes names a little when they are used to address people directly. This means that the beginning of the name may change quite a bit.
A Bhriain         Brian
A Dhónaill       Dónal
A Mhamaí       Mammy
Remember that the ‘A’ and the change in the pronunciation at the beginning of the word only apply when you are calling the person or speaking directly to them. If you are just talking about them there is no change.

There are also little Irish expressions which you can throw in after a name in order to sound friendlier. They have an effect something like ‘love’ in English
A Eddie a stór              Eddie, love
A Nollaig a thaisce      Nollaig, love

You will be continually using your children’s name. Depending on the context and your tone of voice, names can be used to express anything from praise and affection all the way to warnings and threats of retaliation.
